Spanish Comparative Superlative Adjectives


Comparatives

Comparative adjectives in Spanish are used to express comparisons of equality. These are formed by using tan + adjective + como. (the English equivalent is as + adjective + as)

  • Example:
    Luisa es tan alta como Marcos.
    Luisa is as tall as Marcos.
  • Comparatives in Spanish are used to express comparisons of inequality. These are formed by using the word más + adjective + que. (The English equivalent is more + adjective + than) and menos + adjective + que. (The English equivalent is less + adjective + than)

    Examples:
    El pastel de chocolate es más delicioso que el pastel de naranja.
    Chocolate cake is more delicious than orange cake.

    Mi libro de historia es menos pesado que mi libro de matemáticas.
    My history book is less heavy than my math book.


Superlatives

  1. Superlative adjectives in Spanish are used to indicate that the subject has the quality in the highest or lowest degree and above all others.

    Superlative expression is formed by:
    más + adjective + de
    menos + adjective + de

    Examples:
    Sandra es la maestra más pagada de la escuela.
    Sandra is the highest paid teacher of the school.

    Marta es la menos inteligente de la clase.
    Marta is the least intelligent of the class.
  1. Superlatives can be used to express the quality of a person or object without comparing it to others.

    muy + adjective or
    ísimo, ísima, ísimos and ísimas added to the adjective to emphasize the quality.

    Examples:
    La casa de Isabel es muy grande y elegante.
    Isabel’s house is very big and elegant.

    Las rosas rojas son muy lindas. / Las rosas rojas son lindísimas.
    Red roses are very pretty.
