Past Perfect / Pluperfect in Spanish


The past perfect (indicative mood), also known as the pluperfect indicative (Pasado Perfecto / Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto) is used to describe a sequence of events in the past. In order to form the past perfect tense two components are needed, the imperfect conjugation of Haber used in the past perfect (Había) and the past participle of the verb.

Important:
The past perfect of Haber always have an accent mark on the .

Examples:
Rosa había perdido el vuelo.
Rosa had missed the flight.

Nosotros habíamos leído ese libro anteriormente.
We had read that book before.

Luisa había comprado comida cuando yo llegue.
Luisa had bought food when I arrived.
