Prepositions of Place in Spanish

In Spanish, prepositions of place are used to indicate the location of people, places or things. They are always followed by an object, a noun or pronoun.

Example:
preposition of place + object

Mis zapatos están debajo de la mesa.
My shoes are under the table.

Prepositions of Place in Spanish Table

Preposition	Meaning	Example
a	to / into / at	Yo voy a la universidad. I go to the University.
a la derecha (de)	to the right (of)	El teléfono está a la derecha del jarrón. The phone is to the right of the vase.
a la izquierda (de)	to the left (of)	El salero está a la izquierda del plato. The salt shaker is to the left of the plate.
al lado de	beside to / next to	Al lado de mi trabajo hay un parque. Next to my work there is a park.
alrededor de	around	Hay muchos niños jugando alrededor del estadio. There are many children playing around the stadium.
cerca de	near / close to	Mi casa está cerca de la plaza comercial. My house is near the shopping plaza.
debajo de	below / under / underneath	El cargador está debajo de la silla. The charger is under the chair.
delante de	in front of / ahead of	Hay dos personas delante de mí en la fila. There are two people in front of me in line.
dentro de	in / inside	Hay dos manzanas dentro de la canasta. There are two apples in the basket.
detrás de	behind	Detrás de mi casa hay un jardín de rosas. Behind my house is a rose garden.
en	in / on / at	Nosotros vivimos en Turquía. We live in Turkey.
encima de	above / over / on / on top of	Las almohadas están encima de la cama. The pillows are on the bed.
enfrente de	in front of / opposite	El colegio está enfrente de la estación del tren. The school is opposite the train station.
entre	between / in between	Mi cama está entre mi armario y la mesita de noche. My bed is between my closet and the nightstand.
fuera de / afuera	outside	El coche está aparcado fuera de la casa. The car is parked outside the house.
junto a	beside / next to	Catalina vive junto a mi casa. Catalina lives next to my house.
lejos de	far from	Mi restaurante favorito está lejos de mi trabajo. My favorite restaurant is far from my job.
sobre	on / on top of / upon	Los libros están sobre el escritorio. The books are on the desk.

Spanish Al and Del

There are two contractions of prepositions with the use of definite articles:
a + el = al
de + el = del

Yo voy al supermercado. (instead of yo voy a el supermercado)
Mi casa está al lado del parque. (instead of Mi casa está a el lado de el parque)
