How do you request or ask someone for something in a polite way in Spanish? The usage of polite requests (solicitudes educadas en español) is very important in formal situations.

Por Favor

• Using Por favor is the best way to turn a command into a polite request. Por favor normally is placed after a request, although it can also come before.

Examples:
¿Puedo usar el baño, por favor?
Can I use the bathroom, please?

¿Puedes cerrar la ventana, por favor?
Can you close the window, please?

¿Puedes ayudarme por favor? ¡Estoy perdido!
Can you help me please? I’m lost!

Querer / Gustar

• The verb Querer and Gustar (I Would Like) + Por favor

Examples:
Quisiera un vaso de agua, por favor.
I would like a glass of water, please.

Me gustaría ver ese collar, por favor.
I would like to see that necklace, please.

Te importaría / Te molestaría

• Using ¿Te importaría + action + por favor? and ¿Te molestaría + action + por favor? (Would you mind)

Examples:
¿Te importaría si uso tu teléfono, por favor?
Would you mind if I use your phone, please?

¿Te molestaría apagar la luz, por favor?
Would you mind to turn off the light, please?

¿Te importaría esperar un momento mientras compro algunas bebidas, por favor?

Affirmative Responses

• Sí, no hay problema (Yes, no problem)
• Sí, con mucho gusto. (Yes, with pleasure)
• Claro, como no. (Certainly sure)
• Por supuesto. (Of course)

Negative Responses

• No, gracias. (No, thank you)
• Lo siento no. (I’m sorry, no)
• Lo siento, no puedo. (I’m sorry, I can’t.)
• Lamentablemente, no puedo. (Unfortunately, I can´t.)
• Me gustaría, pero no puedo. (I’d like to, but I can’t.)
