The modal verb Can and Can’t in Spanish (el verbo “poder” en español) is used to express ability to do something, to give permission and the possibility of certain events’ occurrence. See Poder Exercises.
‘Poder’ Conjugation in the Present Tense Table

- We use the pronoun se + the modal can (poder) to express authorizations or prohibitions.
Examples:
No se puede comer en clase.
You cannot eat in class.
Se puede tomar café en la oficina.
You can have coffee in the office.
No se puede fumar aquí.
You cannot smoke here.
- We use ‘Poder‘ to ask for permission, to offer, or to ask one’s ability to do something.
Examples:
¿Podemos ir a casa ahora?
Can we go home now?
¿Puedo ayudarte?
Can I help you?
¿Puedes hablar español? Si, puedo hablar español.
Can you speak Spanish? Yes, I can speak Spanish.
