También / Tampoco in Spanish

También and Tampoco (also, too, either, neither) are used when you are agreeing or disagreeing with an idea or thought.

También

• También in Spanish is used in positive sentences to show agreement in an idea or thought.

Examples:

Andre y Daniel están cansados. Yo también estoy cansada.
Andre and Daniel are tired. I am tired too.

Yo vivo en Londres. Yo también vivo en Londres.
I live in London. I also live in London.

Yo hablo español. Yo también.
I speak Spanish. Me too.

Alejandra es tutora de matemáticas. Yo también soy tutor de matemáticas.
Alejandra is a math tutor. I am also a math tutor.

Tampoco

• Tampoco in Spanish is used in negative sentences to show agreement in an idea or thought.

Examples:

Yo no fui a la clase de español hoy. Yo tampoco.
I did not go to Spanish class today. Me neither.

Sofia no puede nadar y yo tampoco
Sofia can’t swim and I can’t either.

No me gusta el sushi. A mí tampoco.
I don’t like sushi. Me neither.

Rose no estará aquí y Mario tampoco.
Rose won’t be here and Mario won’t either.

Disagreeing in Spanish

When disagreeing with an idea or thought, neither también nor tampoco can be used.

The expressions used to disagree are:
Yo sí / Yo no OR A mí sí / A mí no

Examples:

No tengo clases por la mañana. Yo sí tengo clases.
I don’t have classes in the morning. I do have classes.

No me gusta el arroz con leche. A mí sí me gusta
I dont like rice pudding. I do like rice pudding.

Clara quiere ir al cine. Yo no.
Clara wants to go to the movies. I do not.

A nosotras nos gustan los girasoles. A mí no me gustan.
We like sunflowers. I do not like sunflowers.
