In Spanish, the preposition a usually is used to indicate movement, or is placed in front of person or something when it’s the direct object of the verb.
Examples:
Quiero ir al parque a pie.
I want to go to the park on foot.
Quiero ir a correr.
I want to go running.
Vivo a diez kilometros de mi trabajo.
I live ten kilometers from my job.
Vi a tu hermano Carlos.
I saw your brother Carlos.
Salí a comprar café.
I went out to buy coffee.
The personal ‘a’ is used in different situations and differs from the prepositional ‘a’
- The personal ‘a‘ is used in front an indefinite pronoun (alguien, nadie, alguno, ninguno) when it refers to a person and it’s the direct object of a verb.
Examples:
Necesito a alguien que sepa cocinar.
I need someone who knows how to cook.
No veo a nadie que trabaje aquí.
I don’t see anyone working here.
- The personal ‘a‘ is used in front of a geographic name.
Examples:
En invierno quiero ir a Guatemala.
In winter I want to go to Guatemala.
Quiero ir a visitar mi primo a Canadá.
I want to go visit my cousin to Canada.
- The personal ‘a‘ is placed before a noun when this refers specifically to a person or group of people.
Examples:
Ayer vi a la profesora.
Yesterday I saw the teacher.
Maria quiere ir a la piscina.
Maria wants to go to the pool.
No fuimos a la clase de inglés.
We did not go to English class.
